By Steve Lam
Via SuperHeroHype, we have confirmation that Shantel VanSanten has been cast as Patty Spivot in Season 2 of The CW’s The Flash. According to SuperHeroHype, the character of Patty Spivot will be portrayed as “a police officer and science enthusiast who catches the eye of Barry Allen.” She will also be “obsessed with metahumans and partners with Det. Joe West this season but has no idea that her new crush is The Flash.”
Shantel VanSanten is an actress and a model. She made her television debut on NBC’s reality television series Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Model Search. Her stint was short-lived as she was quickly eliminated in the first episode. Her first feature film work was in You and I (2011) — an adaptation of the novel t.A.T.u Come Back — which filmed throughout 2007, but wasn’t released until 2011 in Russia. It was later released on DVD in the United States in 2012. Shantel’s other feature film credits include The Final Destination (2009), In My Pocket (2009), Remembrance (2010), A Golden Christmas 3 (2012), and Something Wicked (2014).
VanSanten also has an extensive television resume which includes CSI: NY, One Tree Hill (Season 7 series regular), The Glades, Beauty & the Beast, Gang Related, The Messengers, and The Night Shift.
The character of Patty Spivot was created by Cary Bates and Irv Novick. She made her first appearance in DC Special Series #1: 5 Star Super-Hero Spectacular in September 1977. In her earliest history, the character was a part-time lab assistant to Barry Allen and had romantic feelings for him. Barry would later save her when she almost experienced the same lightning-chemical-bath accident that transformed Barry into The Flash. She later became the police department’s full-time forensic blood analyst.
In the Flashpoint story arc, Patty would become the new Hot Pursuit after stealing his motorcycle from the Central City Policy Department’s evidence room. Traveling to the 31st century, she would meet Bart Allen / Kid Flash and help him escape from Brainiac. The two then discovered that something in the past had drastically changed the future, and needed to obtain the Speed Force tank in order to go back in time and fix everything. Patty would later die sacrificing herself to save Kid Flash.
In the New 52, The Flash created a new universe in which Patty is alive. In this reality, Patty is in a relationship with Barry Allen who never married Iris.
The Flash Season 2 will premiere on The CW on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 8:00PM EST.
