Doctor Strange: Could Mads Mikkelsen End Up As Dormammu?

Doctor Strange already has a stellar cast. There are well-known talents playing Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), his mentor (Tilda Swinton) and one of his chief rivals (Chiwetel Ejiofor). The only thing is lacks right now is an actor to play the movie’s Big Bad, but it appears Marvel might already have a plan for that too.

Variety broke the news earlier today that Mads Mikkelsen is up for a role in Scott Derrickson’s upcoming film, and that an offer is expected to be made to the actor any day. The 49-year old Danish actor has a higher profile than ever thanks to his star turn in Hannibal, the critically acclaimed but low rated TV series, where he played the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Who would he play? Variety only says that he’d be “another antagonist to Cumberbatch’s titular sorcerer.” So let us do the speculating: Mikkelsen could very well be playing Dormammu, the flame-headed ruler of the Dark Dimension, one of Doctor Strange’s oldest (literally and in terms of comic book longevity) and most powerful foes.

In the comics, Ejiofor’s Karl Amadeus Mordo starts out as a fellow pupil of the Ancient One, but eventually grows jealous when he senses Strange will be the heir apparent. That situation leads to Mordo and Dormammu forming an alliance, and while the Marvel Cinematic Universe films are never straight adaptations, it’s not hard to imagine a story that will follow the same general framework.

Plus, Mikkelsen would make a Dormammu that would bring the proper sense of dread to the table, so we’re all for it if that is indeed what Marvel has in mind. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for an official announcement if and when it comes, as Doctor Strange continues to take shape ahead of its November 4, 2016 release.
