A new year brings new opportunities for comic book characters. For example, something new, weird, and bad always happens to Spider-Man. According to an Istagram post from Marvel Comics, bad things will happen to Spidey this year, too. However, we don’t know if the tragedy or mystery is about Peter Parker or Miles Morales. Peter's already dealing with his 8 Deaths storyline and Miles is a vampire. What could happen next?
This article will highlight ten Marvel Comics characters, teams, and universes that will make waves in 2025. There are world savers, fighters, and possible returns to look forward to. Let’s start with Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants in a possible upcoming war.
Writer's note. The Instagram picture below will be referred to a lot in this article.
The X-Men
A war between Rogue and Cyclops’ teams has been teased since the beginning of X-Men: From the Ashes. Both squads' leaders have thoughts on how to lead mutants into the future and neither are willing to budge. Maybe the upcoming XvX stands for X-Men vs X-Men after all.
Regardless, the unfortunate thing is that war always leaves innocent people hurt or worse and there's always a major mutant murder during X-events. What does 2025 have in store for the X-Men and their friends?
Magik
I fully expect writer Ashley Allen and artist Germán Peralta to make Magik (a.k.a. Illyana Rasputin) one of the best X-Men of the year. Magik’s Blood Hunt tie-in was only a tease of what the creative team have in store.
Look for Illyana to show us all that Marvel Comics fans haven’t seen the upper limits of her powers or the best of her personality yet.
Storm
The end of Murewa Ayodele’s Storm No. 1 showed a cosmic being saying Ororo Munroe was worthy of being their “Eternal Storm”. Storm has already been worshipped as a god and has Thor’s respect as a fellow God of Thunder. That's why the cosmic powers will be easily controlled and what she does with the powers should be epic.
Storm never fails to impress, so there is no doubt in our minds that she will do the same (and more) in 2025.
Namor
Jason Aaron’s Namor shows the former King of Atlantis trying to make amends for his past mistakes. With the fate of the oceans at hand, we’ll see if he can take the lessons he's learned and stop the underwater civil war.
Whether or not Namor stops the battle determines how the seas respond to the surface world’s attacks. While Namor attempts to be more peaceful, a new ruler may not be as willing.
Daredevil
Writer Saladin Ahmed has given Matt Murdock a new purpose in life by making his faith a crucial part of his story. Daredevil isn’t just praying to God and succumbing to Catholic guilt. He’s begun using the word of God to fight devils and send them back to Hell.
Once this battle is over, will Matt become a lawyer full-time again or balance that life with being Father Matteo? Hopefully the latter. The new story is a nice change and it's not as if he can't return to being an attorney down the road.
Wolverine
In the Instagram post at the top of the article, a section says “False Metal” and it very well could refer to Saladin Ahmed’s run of Wolverine. Does this mean that the adamantium is being replaced in characters or is the false metal staying? If so, what kind of new abilities come with the ancient metal and who is the being that’s replacing adamantium?
Either way, we're anticipating that Wolverine will have a major year ahead of him. He always does, but 2025 will likely be another one!
Frank Castle
It’s been almost two years since Frank Castle dropped the Punisher name and started a new mission in Weirdworld and that’s been long enough. The new Punisher (Joe Garrison) may have potential, but he isn’t Frank. It wouldn’t be shocking if Marvel brought him back or at the very least teased his return.
With the character set to make his official MCU debut in the near-future, it would be a good choice to have Frank Castle become The Punisher again in 2025.
Doctor Doom
Everyone loves Victor von Doom and his crossover (One World Under Doom) will amplify his popularity. Doom wants to prove that he’s the only person who can save Earth and he’ll get the chance to do so this year.
It's going to be interesting to see how he’ll react to losing again (he had an opportunity during 2015's Secret Wars) because there's no way he will stay ruler forever. Right? Right?!
Thor
There’s a lot to wonder about in regards to Thor. First, the prophecy made about his death from Donny Cates’ Thor no. 6 is still in play and something All-Father Thor is worried about. His son, Magni, has returned in Immortal Thor No. 17 which could mean he’ll replace his father.
There’s also Roxxon CEO Dario Agger who’s back from the dead and making it a point to ruin the God of Thunder's life. And if that isn’t enough, the Utgard is still coming (read the beginning of Immortal Thor for more on that).
The Ultimate Universe
Lastly, there’s the Maker’s Ultimate Universe. Will The Ultimates have enough time and power to defeat The Maker when he returns when they can’t even beat The Hulk? Were the Guardians of the Galaxy right when they said The Maker couldn’t be stopped? Will the Iron Mask (Reed Richards a.k.a. Doctor. Doom) or Iron Lung (Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Lad) destroy or heal the universe? And what is the Ultimate Incursion?
And let’s not forget about the other titles. Peach Momoko's Ultimate X-Men is at the point where people are starting to hate and fear mutants thanks to the Children of the Atom cult. Ultimate Wolverine by Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio makes its debut in 2025, but this Logan isn't the one we know; he's the Winter Soldier. Don’t forget that Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man continues to be one of the best comic books on the market and will continue to entertain and shock readers.
And then there are the other beings from the Ultimate Universe that haven’t been seen or announced. Who knows who will show up? Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out who's next and what characters will have a big 2025.
