Early casting news for Venom and Carnage

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is just hitting cinemas in several places but already thoughts are turning towards what’s next for the Spider-Man franchise. We’ve got some exciting Spidey prospects coming up with the Sinister Six film, that really begins to take shape in Amazing Spider-Man 2, and then of course there’s the Venom standalone movie.

Venom is one of the Spider-Man universe’s more popular characters and I personally can’t wait to see how Sony handle a film that focuses on the symbiote. However the Venom film is further along than perhaps many people would have thought with Cinematallica reporting that there is at least one draft of a script in-hand and apparently the early stages of casting are in motion.

Whilst the Venom movie hasn’t even been green-lit yet Sony reportedly have a few names in mind for the films protagonist and antagonist, although any of this could be flat-out wrong or could change several times before production actually starts. So with that in mind let’s take a look at who is in the running at this (very) early stage.

Those that have seen Noah recently will have seen Finn Wittrock starring as the younger version of Ray Winstone’s Tubul-Cain. Wittrock is the favourite at the moment for the role of Daily Bugle reporter/anti-hero Eddie Brock, who is, of course, the first person to don the persona of Venom. Basically it looks like Sony are looking to cast a young up-and-comer (similar to Garfield as Spider-Man) that they can turn into a star.

But then who will the antagonist of the film be, assuming that Venom is considered the protagonist? Well, there were rumours that eccentric actor Jim Carrey would be making a cameo in Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Cletus Kasady aka Carnage, however that didn’t come to fruition. However there is an equally eccentric and fanboy favourite actor being considered for the role – Alan Tudyk.

So there we have it, I personally think that Tudyk as Carnage is actually quite an inspired choice and I’m willing to hang the jury on Wittrock as Venom. It would be easy to criticise the casting choice in a similar way to Affleck’s Batman or Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor but it could turn out to be a good choice. That is of course if either of these guys actually do get cast. What do you guys think?
