4. City of Heroes

This is the other game that I truly consider ahead of its time. If it would have come out today, with modern PC technology behind it, or if it would have had a Marvel or DC license behind it? I think it would have been mind-blowing.

As it was, City of Heroes did just fine without either one of those things, even though it was kind of blazing a trail of its own. The MMO genre always seemed ripe for a super hero game, and for a long time, this was the one. It got a much-needed shot in the arm with the City of Villains expansion, and it lasted long enough to go through over 20 content updates and spin-off comics, physical games, HeroClix and more.

That’s not too shabby for a super hero universe that the developers invented out of whole cloth. I managed to rope two of my friends into playing after the game first came out, and one of them went on to become a much more dedicated and regular player than I ever was.

I’m not sure if the time for a super successful super hero MMO has come and gone, but if it has, City of Heroes was closest to getting there.
