Loot Crate Effect Helps The Walking Dead #132 Top October Comic Book Sales

The Walking Dead sells just fine on its own. With the help of Loot Crate, though, it can muster enough juice to be the number one comic book of the month.

That’s what happened in October, as Loot Crate packed in The Walking Dead #132 with its crate for the month, which had a “FEAR” theme. Since the geek gear subscription service is thought to have over 100,000 customers, it’s safe to assume that issue of TWD “sold” at least that many copies, plus what it would normally move in an average month. Something similar happened during the summer, except it was Marvel instead of Image that was the beneficiary when Loot Crate put Rocket Raccoon #1 into its July shipments.

What this tells me is two things: companies are going to continue to work with Loot Crate during months when they don’t have anything truly significant going on. And it would behoove one of the other publishers besides Marvel, DC or Image to try something like this too.

Marvel dominated the remainder of the top 10 list for the month, with two issues of Death of Wolverine, Thor #1 and AXIS #1 helping it sweep the rest of the top five. DC placed Batman #35 sixth and Harley Quinn Annual #1 ninth for its only two top 10 books.

As for the comics industry overall, October was a positive month, with single-digit gains in both units and dollars sold over the previous month and double-digit gains in both categories compared to October 2014. The best news for publishers is that sales of comic books are up for the year in terms of dollars compared to 2013, though units moved are down ever so slightly at under one percent.
