I own the DC encyclopedia and a few other of these coffee table books that have been published over the last few years, and they are generally enjoyable, if for the layman. They all vary in quality and usefulness, but this book would be a great gift for that friend of yours who is lost and always asks ‘who’s that guy?’ while you’re trying to enjoy Gotham or Arrow.
