We’ve maintained all along that the upcoming Wonder Woman movie doesn’t necessarily need a female director, just one who’s the right fit. Warner Bros. apparently believes it has found one who is both.

The Hollywood Reporter had the exclusive earlier today, reporting that Michelle MacLaren has signed on to direct Wonder Woman. The veteran TV director, who has helmed episodes of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead has been rumored to be the leading candidate for the job for several weeks.

The rest of the news is even more intriguing. With no official screenwriters named to the project yet, THR’s sources say that MacLaren will help “develop” the film’s story as well. Giving a director more room to help shape a movie in its formative stages can sometimes backfire, but Marvel allowed James Gunn to do something similar with Guardians of the Galaxy, and the results of that gamble speak for themselves.

For better or worse, Zack Snyder will be one of the film’s three producers. The hottest rumor regarding its plot and setting hit at the beginning of the month, when it was suggested its events would take place prior to World War II.

Wonder Woman is currently scheduled to release on June 23, 2017.
