Batman Wins Again: Valencia Won’t Use Its New Bat Crest
By Nick Tylwalk
Maybe it’s better just not to tangle with Batman at all. A ton of villains have discovered that the hard way over the years, and now Spanish football (or soccer, if you prefer) team Valencia is throwing in the proverbial towel in its struggle against the Dark Knight.
This wasn’t a physical confrontation, mind you, but an ideological one. Valencia has used a bat for years as part of its badge or crest, but it had developed a new one for use in upcoming seasons that DC thought looked a little too much like the Batman symbol. Here’s a comparison image of the two side by side:
DC had already complained to the European agency that handles trademarks, and now Valencia is giving up its claim. The AP reports that the football club was not subject to a lawsuit but that it no longer “plans to use” the new crest. Translation: it simply wasn’t worth the hassle to fight it out in court.
Both parties will continue to use bats in their imagery in their own ways, so I guess that’s a happy ending. And as always, Batman wins, even if it was without a fight this time.
