Even though no one likes to see it happen, the Sony hack are the gift that keep on giving for super hero movie fans. The newest tidbit to come out of the leaked emails involves who will direct the two-part Avengers: Infinity War extravaganza, and while it won’t be Joss Whedon, it’s possible it will be the next best thing.

According to Screen Rant, translating a report by Overtice, some of the emails concerning the ongoing Spider-Man movie situation also confirm that Joe and Anthony Russo will direct Avengers: Infinity War for Marvel. That will keep them in the family, so to speak, after they direct Captain America: Civil War for its 2016 release.

Again, fans would probably be just fine with Whedon sticking around to direct Avengers movies forever, but that was always an impossible dream. The Russo brothers made people sit up and take notice with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a movie that has support in some corners as the best Marvel movie to date. And to be perfectly frank, that kind of acclaim kind of came out of nowhere, as the first Captain America film (which the Russos did not direct) was considered more of a good but not great outing.

Not only that, but the Russo brothers were best known prior to The Winter Soldier, if they were known at all, for directing You, Me and Dupree. It’s quite fair to say they were a pleasant surprise, but if Civil War turns out to be another winner, they’ll have earned enough trust that fans will be comfortable with them bringing Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a satisfying conclusion.

In any case, there’s no rush for Marvel to confirm this report, as the first part of Avengers: Infinity War won’t grace our multiplexes until May 2018.
