First Ant-Man Poster Features Tiny Hero

Maybe this is too much whitespace for some people’s tastes, but I dig it:

Marvel is really having some fun with the marketing for Ant-Man so far. First we got the tiny teaser (to a teaser … Inception!), and now we have the poster emphasizing that this is a hero who shrinks, just in case moviegoers unfamiliar with the comic book character wouldn’t have been able to figure that out from his name.

If it sounds like I’m mocking or being sarcastic there, I’m honestly not. Ant-Man is a hero who’s easy to dismiss as a guy who just shrinks and talks to ants, just like DC’s Aquaman has a reputation as a guy who can swim fast and talk to fish. It’s not the most impressive power set when viewed in a vacuum.

But by owning it like this, Marvel can be in on the jokes while also emphasizing the cool aspects of being able to shrink to microscopic size. And I’d have to think there would be some benefits to that, even if going even smaller, like the Atom, would be even more useful while fighting super villains.

I’ve been somewhat skeptical of Ant-Man the whole way through it’s somewhat bumpy development, but the push it’s getting now is making me cautiously optimistic. If the teaser trailer that debuts during the Agent Carter premiere is also solid, Marvel can still win me over before July.
