First Look: Guardians Of The Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex Alpha #1
By Nick Tylwalk
Mr. Knife already has the Black Vortex, an object of unspeakable power that can bring out the cosmic potential in anyone who looks into it. And if you’ve been reading Legendary Star-Lord (and you should be!), you know that Mr. Knife is actually J-Son, who is desperate for anything that will put him back in the empire-building business.

In Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex Alpha #1, the stakes get raised. Mr. Knife and Thane have their own plans for the Black Vortex, and it’s up to the Guardians, X-Men, Nova and Captain Marvel to stop them. If they don’t, billions of lives could be lost.
And it’s not just a simple matter of stopping the bad guys, because after all, the heroes could use the Black Vortex too. If they do, they run the risk of being seduced by the power they could obtain. As writer Sam Humphries explains, it’s an artifact that can really make things interesting.
“What happens when one person submits to the Black Vortex and becomes a titan of the cosmos?” Humphries said in an interview with Marvel.com. “What happens when a whole team does it? Or a whole planet? Imagine the metamorphosis that turned Norin Radd into the Silver Surfer, or Jean Grey into Dark Phoenix, available to anyone in the Marvel Universe.
“But of course, no amount of power comes without a cost.”
Ominous! Humphries in joined by artists Ed McGuinness and Kris Anka on The Black Vortex Alpha #1, and we’ve got a first look at their work. Look for the issue in stores or on digital on February 4, and keep one hand on your soul if you’re going to look into the Black Vortex!
