Supergirl To Be A Super-Powered Crime Procedural?
By Nick Tylwalk
Well, CBS is the home of the crime procedural, and it makes a lot of money from them. Plus, Supergirl does have some abilities that would come in handy investigating crimes. Microscopic vision, anyone?
It’s just not what I would first think of when someone mentioned Supergirl to me, and it’s a little disappointing that CBS wouldn’t go a little bit further outside its comfort zone with the Supergirl show currently in development. CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler told Entertainment Weekly that the series will have some elements current network viewers should find comforting while also incorporating broader storytelling techniques:
"There will be [crime] cases, but what [executive producers] Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti pitched was a real series arc for her. The beauty of it is now with shows like Good Wife and Madam Secretary, you can have serialized story elements woven into a case of the week. She’s a crime solver, so she’s going to have to solve a crime. She’s going to get a bad guy."
There were also some bits that should make fans of the comics breathe a little easier. The Supergirl costume is being designed by the Colleen Atwood, designer on Arrow and The Flash, and Tessanti described it as “awesome.”
Also, there’s every indication that there is no problem with a crossover between Supergirl and the DC shows on The CW, something that has been much discussed over the past few months. We know the showrunners on the CW side are open to it, so all that remains is for CBS to feel the same way.
And hey, Barry Allen helps solve crimes too, so he could work as a guest star in a procedural format. In other words, Kara, don’t hesitate to give Central City a call if you’re ever stuck on a case.
