Guardians, Captain America, Big Hero 6 Receive Oscar Nominations
By Nick Tylwalk
No, none of the super hero movies from 2014 are up for Best Picture or anything like that. But the big ones to come out last year all got some love during the Oscar nominations, which were announced this morning.

Guardians of the Galaxy, which for now is still the top-grossing movie of 2014 (though certain to be passed by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 any day now), received two Academy Award nominations, one for Visual Effects and the other for Makeup and Hair Styling. Considering that two of its main characters were skin tones not normally fond in nature, it definitely should get the thumbs up for makeup, and Benicio del Toro’s hair as the Collector should be enough on its own to be considered for that part of the award.
While not as over-the-top as its fellow Marvel movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is also in the running for Visual Effects. The scenes with the multiple Helicarriers were definitely impressive, as was Cap escaping from S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters and having to take down a plane in the process.
As Newsarama points out, the most impressive nomination by a comic-related film was probably Big Hero 6, which is up for Best Animated Feature Film — though not against The LEGO Movie, to the chagrin of many on social media this morning. I haven’t seen all the nominated movies in that category, but I’d have to think it has a chance thanks to its surprisingly clever blend of action, humor and emotion.
The 87th Academy Awards will be given out on February 22, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting the event live on ABC.
