Whose Side Will Black Widow Take In Captain America: Civil War?

Marvel still hasn’t released a super hero movie with a female lead — we’ll get one on 2018 when Captain Marvel hits theaters — but Captain America: The Winter Soldier did give Black Widow a healthy portion of the spotlight. It’s safe to say that Captain America would not have been able to come out on top in his battle against Hydra without a large assist from the Widow.

Thus, minus a Black Widow solo film, it only seems fitting that directors Joe and Anthony Russo told interviewers in Beijing that “Scarlett Johansson will be back” for Captain America: Civil War. And with that movie pitting Captain America against Iron Man, surely she’ll be taking Steve Rogers’ side in the conflict, right?

Not so fast. As MTV points out, the Widow has ties to Tony Stark as well, and she joined the pro-Registration side in the Civil War comic. We also don’t know what will cause the rift between heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If, as rumored, it’s the Winter Soldier’s involvement in Howard Stark’s death, it’s easy to see why Natasha might be pretty conflicted over who to stand beside, given her own past.

If the MCU Civil War follows the broader themes of the comics in terms of holding heroes responsible to the general public, that also might muddy the situation for Black Widow. As one of the Avengers without super powers, it’s logical that she might feel some oversight of people who can call down lightning and turn into large, gamma-powered monsters might be a good idea. Then again, the whole Hydra/S.H.I.E.L.D. affair should make her question who would actually be able to do that. And the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron could affect her feelings on all of this as well.

You would expect that Cap would both want and need the Widow on his side more than Iron Man, at least enough to ask for her help. Whether that’ll be enough, we won’t know until Captain America: Civil War arrives on May 6, 2016.
