Now we know what those mysterious Once Upon a Time/Marvel teasers were all about.

Marvel and ABC announced today that they were to promote Once Upon a Time: Out of The Past, a brand new, hardcover graphic novel that goes on sale on April 1. Written by Once Upon a Time TV writer Kalinda Vazquez and Corinna Bechko — who penned the last Once Upon a Time comic two years ago — the book features art by Janet Lee, Pascal Campion, Vanesa Del Rey and Betsy Peterschmidt, with a cover by Stacey Lee.

Inside its 112 pages, Once Upon a Time: Out of the Past will focus on the origin stories of the characters for whom we saw symbols in the four teasers earlier this week. To wit:

"Board the Jolly Roger on an adventure with the young Killian Jones, before he was known as the notorious Captain Hook, as he uncovers the mysteries of the Leviathan Shoals and the monster that lurks beneath the surface.Witness the early sparks of Rumplestiltskin’s and Belle’s star-crossed romance, when Belle was just a servant in Rumplestiltskin’s castle.Travel to the Enchanted Forest with the Evil Queen, Regina, where she faces down demons from her past.  Will the skeletons in her closet haunt her forever?Experience Wonderland in the unforgettable origin tale of Jefferson, the portal-jumping Mad Hatter, and witness the loss that caused him to lock away his magical hat for good."

What’s interesting is that my wife, a Once Upon a Time super-fan who has seen every episode of the series, informed me that the show has already covered some of this ground. She claims that to make good on the promise of “four never-been-told stories,” the graphic novel will have to go a lot deeper into the origins than what has already made it to the screen.

Also of note: the presence of the Mad Hatter, Jefferson, who only featured in six episodes spread across Season 1 and Season 2 — and some were short appearances. On TV, Jefferson was played by Sebastian Stan, who Marvel fans know better as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier. Could this hint at more Mad Hatter if Stan’s schedule ever permits?

Once Upon a Time: Out of the Past will hit comic shops and bookstores on April 1, while the show that inspired it returns with new episodes on March 1.
