There were some exciting rumors heading into Super Bowl XLIX this past weekend. Maybe there would be a new, longer Ant-Man trailer. The site iSpot.tv felt confident enough to declare there could be a Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice teaser and left a page open specifically so people could watch it again.

Instead, we got … nothing. No Marvel moves, definitely no Dawn of Justice, nothing for the comic book crowd — unless you want to count the Kingsman spot that ran during the pre-game show. But certainly no super heroes at a time when super hero movies are about to become a round-the-calendar thing. So what gives? Here are my two guesses.
- It was mostly due to timing
Honestly, the main reason I think the big upcoming super hero movies sat out the biggest advertising stage possible was simply a matter of timing for most of them. Avengers: Age of Ultron has had two different trailers already but isn’t quite in the stretch run for its May 1 release. Ant-Man just showed us its first teaser not that long ago, as did Fantastic Four.
And let’s be honest: Dawn of Justice was always a bit of a pipe dream. Yes, it would have garnered incredible amounts of buzz had a teaser aired, and since principal photography is done, you’d assume the producers could have one done if they chose to do so. We just have to remember that the movie isn’t due in theaters for another 13 months. That’s still a long time off to start showing trailers.
- Super hero movies don’t need the Super Bowl attention
Were it not for the timing thing, I have no doubt we would have seen something from Marvel, and the Fantastic Four reboot likely is an exception in that it needs all the exposure it can get because of its seemingly radical new approach to familiar characters. The fact remains that most super hero movies don’t rely on events like the Super Bowl to fuel their hype trains.
Even non-comic fans await each Marvel movie’s trailers. Batman v Superman is a slam dunk concept to at least get the average moviegoer curious. The initial teaser can be released at any time and still attract tons of attention.
Still, I can’t help but feel a little bummed we didn’t get any super heroes during any commercial breaks. But buck up: there are so many super hero flicks on the schedule for 2016 that this isn’t likely to happen again next year. If anyone wants to start some early rumors about what we’ll see during next year’s Super Bowl, go right ahead.
