DC Announces New Titles, Creative Teams For 49 Series In June

A few years ago, DC had the New 52. This summer, it’s going to have the Mostly New 49.

That 49 represents the number of titles we’ll see from DC Comics (though some of them will be limited series) after Convergence takes over the line in April and May. The company announced this morning that 25 current titles will be joined by 24 new series in June. The current books will resume with their current numbering after Convergence, as opposed to starting with new #1 issues, and some popular creative teams — Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo on Batman, to name one — will remain in place.

However, a big focus of DC’s plan will be diversifying the overall line and adding more talent to its roster of creators. Gene Luen Yang, Bryan Hitch, and Ming Doyle were all names mentioned in the initial release, and they will all be on major books: Yang is writing Superman with art by John Romita Jr., Hitch is writing and illustrating Justice League of America, while Doyle will team with artist Riley Rossmo on Constantine: The Hellblazer.

Though slightly more vague, DC also revealed plans to “reinvent” characters like Black Canary, Cyborg and Starfire, each of whom will get their own ongoing series.

“This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us,” DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio said in a statement.  “Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.”

A follow-up post on the DC blog listed all 49 titles that will arrive in June, but I don’t mind highlighting some of the more interesting newcomers:

  • Black Canary, written by Brenden Fletcher with art by Annie Wu and Irene Koh
  • Dark Universe, written by James Tynion IV with art by Ming Doyle
  • Martian Manhunter, written by Rob Williams with art by Ben Oliver
  • Omega Men, written by Tom King with art by Alec Morgan
  • Prez, written by Mark Russell with art by Ben Caldwell
  • Section Eight, a limited series that reunites the Hitman team of Garth Ennis and John McCrea
  • We Are Robin, written by Lee Bermejo with art by Khary Randolph

DC is promising a lot more information on the new series in the coming weeks and months, but clearly, there’s a lot to anticipate already. Hit us with a comment and let us know what sounds most interesting to you.
