Civil War Comics Writer Knows Who Should Be Cast As Spider-Man

Now that Spider-Man is getting a rebirth in the movies courtesy of Marvel and Sony, the natural next question is when we’ll see him on screen again. And since we have that one pretty much figured out already — spoilers: it’s almost certainly going to be in Captain America: Civil War — the next question after that is who’s going to be suiting up in the famous red and blue suit, because all indications are that Andrew Garfield is out and the studios will start fresh with a new Peter Parker.

A wave of opinions is already flooding social media and the internet, but one in particular caught my eye. It came via Twitter from Mark Millar, who wrote the Civil War comic book series for Marvel. He’s also had a number of his comic properties turned into movies, so we’ll assume he has an informed opinion on the matter.

Anyway, Millar tweeted out his support for someone we’ll be seeing this weekend in another comic book movie, albeit one with super spies instead of super heroes:

It’s worth noting that Egerton is the star of Kingsman: The Secret Service, which is due in U.S. theaters this weekend and based on a series written by Millar. So yes, it’s possible there’s a little bias involved. Still, Millar went on to explain exactly why Egerton would make a great Peter Parker:

We’ll have to take his word for it for now. I’d also add that the ideal Peter has a way with wisecracks and is nerdy enough to make us believe that he got picked on before his fateful run-in with that radioactive spider. Might Egerton actually be too cool to give that impression? He seems like he might be.

It sure is fun to be speculating about a (partially) Marvel Spider-Man again, though, and Millar isn’t going to be the only high profile creator weighing in on this particular casting decision. We’ll see if any other suggestion from the comics community ends up with a groundswell of support.
