Where Will Spider-Man Make His Marvel Cinematic Universe Debut?
By Nick Tylwalk
The next time you see Spider-Man in a movie, it’s going to be in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Let that sink in for just a second. Now that you’re done, there’s an obvious follow-up question: which one?

All we know from the initial Marvel-Sony deal announcement is that it will be a flick that comes out before July 28, 2017, when a new Sony Spider-Man movie will be released. However, we do know which MCU movies are going to release between the end of 2015 (’cause it’s not going to be in Avengers: Age of Ultron or Ant-Man, unless they sneak him into a post-credits scene … nah, surely not) and the summer of 2017.
That’s all we need to make an educated guess. Let’s check them out:
- Captain America: Civil War – Even though everyone involved has denied that Spider-Man would be in this movie, that was before Monday night’s announcement. Spider-Man was a major player in the comic book series that gives the movie its subtitle, and while I still think it’s a mistake introducing him into this universe in this way, I’m in the minority of opinion on this. Civil War is clearly the frontrunner. Probability of Spidey: 89 percent.
- Doctor Strange – This movie has to explain to folks who Doctor Strange is, cover his origin in at least some detail and introduce magic to the MCU. It’s got enough on its plate without worrying about Peter Parker swinging through. Probability of Spidey: 10 percent.
- Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – Well, James Gunn did say there would be some new characters in the second film, so … just kidding. This movie isn’t even going to take place on Earth, so there’s no place in it for the wall-crawler. The only reason I’m even giving it anything other than zero is on the off chance that we haven’t seen him up until now and he get thrown into the post-credit mix here. But that would be dumb. Probability of Spidey: 1 percent.
There you go, take it to the bank. Everyone who wished for Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War is likely to get their wish.
