Was Harley Quinn Inspired By Days of Our Lives?
Harley Quinn is easily the most popular female comic book character going right now. Which of course is ironic considering that she started off as an original character for the Batman: The Animated series TV show. Harley Quinn was even just suppossed to be a one-off, but proved so popular she kept being brought back, eventually becoming an accepted part of the canonical DC Universe. But the inspiration for Harley Quinn may be a bit of a surprise to you.

Vulture has a story: “The Hidden Story of Harley Quinn and How She Became the Superhero World’s Most Successful Woman” in they discuss the long and storied history of DC’s most successful female character and talk about how she was essentially inspired by a scene from the soap opera, Days Of Our Lives. Essentially, Arleen Sorkin, the original voice of Harley Quinn (Tara Strong has recently been voicing the role), gave her college pal Paul Dini a VHS tape that had her favorite moments from being on Days Of Our Lives, including a fantasy scene where her character acts like a medieval court jester:
