All-New X-Men #36 Recap

The last issue of All-New X-Men ended with Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man, using a last-gasp heroic gambit to try and stop Doctor Doom whilst the 616 and Ultimate universe X-Men clash with Doom’s Doom Bots. However Dr. Doom was clued-up to Miles’ invisibility and countered with a blast from his weapon leading to a dramatic explosion. So what happens next?

Well, All-New X-Men #36 opens with a double page spread of all of the heroes laid low following Doom’s blast. Dr. Doom’s castle is burning in the distance and the iconic villain is standing over Miles Morales’ body, pinning him to the floor and doing a typical evil-person monologue.

He picks up Miles Morales and removes his mask, talking about how curious he is at Miles Morales’ genetic advancements. He tells a beaten Miles that he will dissect him when he’s done. This causes standard universe Jean Grey to cry out. She then uses her powers to prevent Doom from hurting Miles.

Doctor Doom and Jean Grey end up mentally sparring with Jean Grey’s mental powers and Doctor Doom’s sorcerer supreme powers. Doctor Doom tells Jean that she’s incredibly powerful and he respects that but Doctor Doom is even more powerful than her and she cannot possibly win. She informs him that she didn’t intend to win, only distract him! We then see that Miles Morales and the other X-Men have risen.

The team then work together to stop an overwhelmed Doctor Doom. The two Icemen trap him in one place by freezing him into an ice cocoon, Storm then hits him with a bolt of lightning and the two Jean Greys attack his mind together. Suddenly Doom vanishes with the heroes unclear about whether or not he was dead or not.

Just in case Doom is still around Beast decides to leave him a little present, leading the X-Men and Spider-Man to Doctor Doom’s control room. The heroes then retreat to a safe distance and observe Doom’s castle. There’ a brief Chekhov’s gun where nothing happens, but suddenly the entirety of Doom’s castle explodes.

We then jump to what appears to be Old-Man Logan fighting Ben Grimm. We soon realise that we’re seeing this because the mutant that teleported the 616 X-Men to the Ultimate Universe in the first-place has lost control of her power and is opening up gates to other universes. We see then see another universe with as Volstagg in Asgard in it, before she ends up being found by the combined X-Men teams.

The X-Men continue the job of reassuring her that they started when they met her. Jean says that she tried to help psychically and it went wrong, hence why they’re in the Ultimate Universe. However with the hope of the Ultimate Universe Jean Grey they reckon that can guide Carmen Cruise to help her use her powers and get them home.

Carmen, with the Jean’s help, begins randomly opening doors to other dimensions with the others standing guard to protect them from whatever comes out from the other side. We briefly see Earth 58163 which takes place on Genosha and we briefly see Earth 10082 which is an alternate Age of Apocalypse. Beast then tells the Jeans to look for a specific brain synapse, which would be the same one as the one she used to get them there in the first place.

They see a world with Iron Man and Thor flying past and Jean reads Tony’s mind to find out whether they’re in the right universe. The two different pairs of X-Men say their goodbyes. Jean Grey takes Miles aside and tells him that he was selfless and heroic because he’s Spider-Man but that he was also a very goof friend when she needed one. She kisses him on the cheek and tells him that he’s the best. He holds his cheek as she waves goodbye. The Ultimate X-Men offer to give him a lift home.

We then see the X-Men returning Carmen to her worried mother as she thanks them. Carmen explains she was missing because she’s a mutant and has developed powers. Meanwhile Jean and Beast are having a telepathic conversation, Beast tells Jean that he’s had enough of evil being everywhere and that they need to change the world and do it now. The issue ends with her asking what that means!
