Several famous X-Men characters were recast for X-Men: Apocalypse. Wolverine wasn’t one of them.

That’s probably for the best, as Hugh Jackman is as synonymous with that role as any actor playing any super hero today. It’s hard to imagine anyone else as Logan, especially since the 46-year old Australian always shows up for each film in tremendous shape.

As he recently told Cigar Aficionado, that’s by design, because he feels he can’t let up when it comes to training to look the part.

"I always want to be in better shape than I was for the last one. I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo. But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding,"

Jackman also revealed that Michael Keaton’s turn in Birdman got to him on a personal level, making him think he should try to keep playing Wolverine “until I die.” But he also stated that if someone else eventually pops the claws, he’d be more than alright with it, he’d actually feel a sense of accomplishment.

"I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor … I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic."

Fans don’t have to worry about that day coming around just yet. Not only will Jackman’s Wolverine feature in X-Men: Apocalypse, which is due in theaters on May 27, 2016, Fox is also working on another solo film for the character that is expected to release in March 2017.
