Joss Whedon Says Avengers: Age Of Ultron Is Every Movie Genre
By Nick Tylwalk
Well, maybe not every genre, but darn near all of them. Avengers: Age of Ultron gave a lengthy interview to Yahoo! Movies where he discussed the upcoming flick extensively, and when it came to the question of what genre the movie belonged in, he certainly hedged his bets.
"To me, adventure film is the best way to put it. Then science fiction, action, western, war, woman’s picture, horror movie … I’m not kidding; every single one of those things is in there."
Let’s break those down a bit, shall we? Adventure is pretty obvious, since we’re talking about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Sci-fi is also an easy one, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always leaned that way. Action is self-explanatory as well.
From the look of some of the destruction in the previews, war comes to mind fairly easily, and could be even more literal if we dip back into the pasts of Captain America and Black Widow. Speaking of the Widow, I’m guessing that’s where “woman’s picture” comes into play. We saw a glimpse of Natasha’s ballet training in one of the teaser trailers, or at least that’s what it looked like.
Ultron isn’t a stereotypical horror movie villain, but he is kind of scary. That only leaves western; I’m not sure how that figures in.
So we can give Whedon a pass on what appeared to be a wishy-washy answer on the surface, because Age of Ultron probably will check off most of those boxes. Make sure you read the entire interview for much more on the huge climax, the extra emotional elements and other good stuff Whedon says he packed into the sequel.
