Amazing Video: What If Wes Anderson Directed An X-Men Movie?
By Nick Tylwalk
You know what the problem with most of of our dream casting and directing choices for super hero movies is? It’s not adventurous enough.

Case in point: the video below by Patrick Willems. As its title suggests, it really is “What if Wes Anderson directed X-Men?” And just in case that doesn’t get you intrigued right off the bat, let me assure you that the results are pretty amazing.
Told from the perspective of a nerdy Bobby Drake that would probably give the real Iceman nightmares, the video follows him as he joins the X-Men at the invitation of Professor X, referencing a number of famous stories from the comics along the way. Graymalkin Lane is in the city in this case, and much of it is played for laughs while incorporating some of Anderson’s trademark storytelling techniques.
My personal highlights:
- When Iceman questions the need for battle strategy and seems bewildered about the possibility of fighting people, Hank McCoy’s response is priceless: “Didn’t you get the letter? We’re a school, but we’re also a paramilitary mutant strike force.” Cyclops adds: “So yeah. We’re gonna fight people.”
- Confronted by a Sentinel (or at least the foot of a Sentinel), Iceman and Angel seem to be at a loss. Wolverine says he’s got it, pops his claws and charges into slo-mo glory, with Angel guessing that he’s the art teacher.
There’s more, but I can’t do it justice. Stick around at the end to hear Willems talk about how and where they shot it. Assuming Anderson isn’t actually going to direct a super hero movie, maybe Fox should keep this guy’s number handy next time it needs to reboot the X-Men franchise.
