First Look: Groot Grows Into Own Series In Groot #1
By Nick Tylwalk
Groot has come a long way since his creation as another one of Marvel’s generic giant monsters 55 years ago. Not only has he shot to stardom as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, he’s part of one of the most unique best friend bonds in all of super hero comics alongside Rocket Raccoon. The only thing left is for him to get his own solo series, and wouldn’t you know it, Marvel is taking care of that too.

In Groot #1, writer Jeff Loveness and artist Brian Kesinger are about to show us all that Groot knows more than three words. Just kidding … I think. It actually appears that Groot’s inability to communicate with the rest of the Marvel Universe is going to be central to the plot, particularly since he won;t have Rocket around to lend a hand with translation.
“There’s a huge language barrier between Groot and the rest of the Marvel Universe,” Loveness said in an interview with Marvel.com. “He may be a kind-hearted soul to us, but to a stranger, he’s just a terrifying tree-monster. He’s bound to get in trouble because of people judging him before they know him.”
Marvel is promising a first issue full of “Explosions! Intergalactic Hitchhiking! Aliens! Space Sharks!” All those exclamation points … It’s bound to be one of the more unique first issues around, so get a first look at a few pages from Groot #1 below, and prepare for its arrival in stores and on digital in June.
