Evil Reigns In Squadron Sinister #1
By Nick Tylwalk
Before Marvel did any of its multiple interesting takes on the Squadron Supreme, there was the Squadron Sinister, a group of villains given super powers by the Grandmaster to … What’s that? The Squadron Supreme did come first? Well, shoot, this is confusing.

In any case, the Squadron Supreme has always been a group of bad guys with powers similar to a certain DC super-team, and it’s also getting its own Secret Wars tie-in. Hyperion, Nighthawk, Whizzer, Doctor Spectrum and Warrior Woman rule their own area of Battleworld called Utopolis, but even with the massive power at their disposal, forces are conspiring to try to bring them down in Squadron Sinister #1.
If you take a look at the cover, it appears the Marvel Max version of the Squadron Supreme might be throwing down with these villains, though writer Mark Guggenheim has been hinting at internal strife as just as big a threat.
“[Squadron Sinister] is very much in keeping with a crime drama,” Guggenheim said in an interview with Marvel.com. “A lot of my touchstones were the Godfather movies and ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ ‘The Sopranos’. You know, that very criminal centric drama that shows that heavy is the head that wears the crown.”
Look for Squadron Sinister #1, by Guggenheim and artist Carlos Pacheco, to hit with the second wave of Secret Wars tie-ins in June.
