Amazing Spider-Man #15 Review
By C.T. Smith
It’s over, one of the best Marvel events to date (fact), the Spider-Verse! The finale saw the conclusion of the life or death, multiverse spanning battle between the Inheritors and the Spider-Totems, and left us excited for the fallout and epilogue of Amazing Spider-Man #15. But did it deliver?
The issue opens with a nice shot of the remaining Spider-Men waiting to go home to their respective universes, and it honestly made me wish the event explored more of them. I mean, we see an Iron Fist Spider-Man, another Fantastic 4 (not 5) Spider-Man, and even a Deadpool Spider-Man! Hell, a team up with just those three sounds pretty sweet to me.
I felt that May Parker got the ending she deserved, and Uncle Ben was saved from his own, personal hell of a universe. May’s dad may be dead, but she’s got her mom, brother, and a new grandpa Ben, and by all rights she deserves to graduate from Spider-Girl to Spider-Woman as they imply in this issue.
Now we all knew that the Superior Spider-Man part of the whole ordeal had to be solved somehow, but I wish after everything he’s accomplished and been through in the span of the Spider-Verse, Superior got a better ending than the one presented here. It stays true to Otto’s character (except for when he “redeemed” himself by sacrificing himself at the end of the Superior Spider-Man run) that he would try to save himself and come out on top; however, he contributed a lot to the battle against the Inheritors and for him to go classic Sinister Six and try to kill everyone it seems like he didn’t get the payoff/growth he deserves.
I did enjoy how it tied in to his return to the past and completes the full circle of where he was before his return in Superior Spider-Man #19, and it did leave an in for his return with his foreboding activation of a plan he concocted with his Anna Marconi computer program. And can we please acknowledge how awesome it was when Peter (a life-force weakened Peter at that, which is sure to cause ramifications in later issues) punched him out and declared in an Otto-esque fashion that he is THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN!
Other than that I feel that this was a decent epilogue that addressed all the necessary points. The Secret Wars: Spider-Verse seed was planted with the formation of the Warriors of the Great Web, Kaine seems to have survived -perhaps, and Peter received the confidence boost that he deserved, but stays true to his roots when his first act upon returning to New York is stopping a purse snatcher in his tracks. Time to return to normal life… at least as normal as the Parker luck allows!
If you haven’t read the Spider-Verse yet, I highly suggest you do so now! Let me know how you felt about the event overall in the comments below, and keep swinging.
