WARNING: There are obviously some big time spoilers in here for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44, which came out this week from IDW. Read on at your own discretion! Also, this is comic book continuity only, at least for now …

For as long as we’ve seen them in action, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have always been a foursome. Well, except for the few years that Venus de Milo was around, but no one likes talking about that.

In any case, we bring this up because it appears the group of brothers might be down by one after the events of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44, which is part four of the “Attack on Technodrome” arc. With the Turtles, Shredder and Krang all battling for control of the Technodrome, some temporary alliances were formed, and they were bound to come apart at the seams before all the dust settled.

One of those situations left Donatello and Metalhead alone against Bebop and Rocksteady, and the result, it seems, was fatal.

It’s a bold move for the creative team of writer Tom Waltz and artist Cory Smith, and it must have stirred up some personal feelings for Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, who did the cover for the issue. This being comics, we certainly can’t rule out the chance that we’ll see Donatello again, but if you haven’t been paying attention to the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series up until now, you might want to rectify that immediately.
