With Joss Whedon leaving the Avengers movie franchise after Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel is supposedly keeping things in the family, so to speak.

Citing an anonymous source, Badass Digest claims that Anthony and Joe Russo have signed to direct both parts of Avengers: Infinity War, keeping the brothers busy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the forseeable future. The Russos directed Captain America: The Winter Solider and are gearing up to helm Captain America: Civil War. Joe also directed the Agent Carter episode “Bridge and Tunnel” on his own.

This is all rumor until officially confirmed by marvel, but Devin Faraci has come through on these kinds of scoops in the past. His source also says that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely could end up writing the films, “keeping the band together” since they collaborated on the Captain America films as well.

I have mixed feelings about this if it pans out, because while everyone involved has done excellent work so far (I loved The Winter Soldier, for what it’s worth), Marvel has also had great success trying directors and writers who don’t have a pre-existing track record with comic book or super hero films. It might be nice to get a new voice or two on the grand two-part conclusion to the Avengers saga — for now, anyway, as I expect Marvel to continue on with the series in some way into the next decade.

On the other hand, it’s perfectly understandable for the studio to want someone proven on a project like this. The majority of fans should be pleased that the series is in good hands, but we won’t know for sure until Marvel says something.

Avengers: Infinity War will release as two films, with Part I hitting theaters on May 4, 2018 and Part II following on May 9, 2019.
