Which Other Marvel Characters Might Appear In Avengers: Age Of Ultron?
By Nick Tylwalk
Man, we super hero fans are greedy. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we’re already getting the six core Avengers from the first film, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Vision, plus Ultron himself, one of the team’s greatest foes. We’ve already seen Nick Fury, Maria Hill and War Machine in trailers, and we’ve had confirmation that Andy Serkis is playing Ulysses Klaw. Still, we want more.

Thanks to the movie poster, we know that Peggy Carter (in a flashback scene, apparently) and Falcon, previously thought to be sitting this movie out, will also figure in. Loki and Heimdall? Yep, them too.
Still, many people are focused on something director Joss Whedon said when asked whether we’d be seeing Marvel characters we weren’t expecting. More precisely, Whedon gave the most direct confirmation possible: “Yes.”
With that in mind, I figured it would be fun to try to guess who he’s talking about. I’m assuming that the movie plus any mid-credits and post-credits scenes are all fair game for this from Whedon’s point of view. I’ll give my possibilities along with the odds I figure there are of seeing said heroes or villains show up.
- Thanos – 50 percent
Even though everyone involved with Age of Ultron has been very clear that this is not Thanos’ movie, let’s not forget that the Mad Titan is still out there scheming. One of the trailers has shown Tony Stark in possession of Loki’s scepter, and that’s long been suspected to house one of the Infinity Stones. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Thanos’ attention is drawn to Earth by the events of this film, meaning we could see him during or after the credits, just like in the first Avengers flick.
- Black Panther – 35 percent
Given that Klaw is involved somehow, it stands to reason that we’ll be introduced to Wakanda. Chadwick Boseman has already been cast in this role, so he’s available for a short post-credits scene. Maybe it’ll just be T’Challa out of costume, but that still counts.
- Guardians of the Galaxy – 10 percent
My thinking here is simply that there have been no real links between Marvel’s two cinematic super-teams to date, and James Gunn is making it sound like the Guardians’ second film will have them off in their own corner of the galaxy again. If they’re going to be in Avengers: Infinity War (either part), there needs to be some connective tissue. Rumors have suggested that the Hulk might end up off-planet by the end of Age of Ultron, in which case he certainly could attract the attention of Star-Lord and company.
- Spider-Man – 3 percent
Impossible, you say? The fact that the new shared Sony/Marvel Spider-Man has yet to be cast does make this unlikely, but if all we see is the web-slinger in his suit, it could be anyone under there. I don’t think the appearance of any other character could move the needle like he would, and if Spider-Man is going to play any kind of role in Captain America: Civil War, you can’t rule this out.
- Doctor Strange – 1 percent
Despite having a director (Scott Derrickson) and star (Benedict Cumberbatch) attached, the good doctor’s solo film has been flying relatively under the radar as of late. This would be an out of left field cameo, for sure, but one that would excite comic book fans and perhaps get the general public saying, “What?” In a good way, kind of like having Howard the Duck at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy.
