Venom, Mayday Parker Highlight Spider-Island #1 During Secret Wars
By Nick Tylwalk
During the original “Spider-Island” arc, Peter Parker helped save the day after pretty much everyone in Manhattan ended up with spider-powers. Somehow, I have a feeling things aren’t going to turn out quite as well when that story gets revisited during Secret Wars.

Sure enough, writer Christos Gage and artist Paco Diaz have something a bit different in mind for Spider-Island #1, a Secret Wars Warzones title that goes on sale in July. This time around, Peter Parker has been lost, and the only hope of defeating the Spider-Queen lies in the hands of Flash Thompson, otherwise known as Agent Venom.
It’s just not going to be easy for him to set things right.
“Flash carries a great burden here,” Gage said in an interview with Marvel.com. “Due to his symbiote’s vulnerability to the Spider-Queen’s sonic powers, he failed to save his hero, Spider-Man or New York. Now he drives himself mercilessly to find redemption, by any means necessary.”
Spider-Island #1 also features a second story starring Mayday Parker. You know her from the MC2 days as Spider-Girl, but she’s grown into Spider-Woman in a tale by her original creators, Tom DeFalco, Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema. DeFalco is promising “a good roller coaster ride” as he pits May against the horrors of Secret Wars.
That’s two stories for the price of one, though they both appear to be Peter Parker-free. Look for Spider-Island #1 during the third month of Secret Wars and be glad there’s enough left of any version of Manhattan to be involved in this one!
