Even if the Marvel movies aren’t your favorites, you have to admire the way they’ve helped cement super hero films in the public consciousness. Prior to 2008, movies with costumed crimefighters were the exception rather than the rule, and if you weren’t Batman or Spider-Man, your chances of making it to the multiplex were slim.

As we reach the halfway point of this decade, saying things have changed is a massive understatement. Marvel has succeeded beyond what even its most optimistic execs could have expected when it first set out to establish its own movie studio, churning out one massive hit after another.

What made this possible? In large part, it’s because Marvel had the vision to think on a much broader scale than anyone had attempted before. Instead of doing separate movies, the company sees all of its projects as parts of a larger whole, one that’s come to be known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The MCU films have been a boon for fans, who’ve had a chance to see tons of things they’ve long wished for make their way from comics to theaters.  Marvel has been able to cook up a connected world that pays the proper amount of respect to its source material while retaining the ability to surprise and delight.

It goes without saying that these movies have also produced countless scenes and bits of dialogue that will one day be iconic in their own right. Even as we await the next wave of flicks that begins with Avengers: Age of Ultron, we’ve thrown ourselves back into what’s come before to pick out the very best of them. After some deliberation, we’ve decided on our favorite bits from the first seven years of Marvel Studios, which we’re calling the 41 Greatest Moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

These are the things that made us cheer, laugh or gasp the most, so please come along and relive them with us.
