Recap: Avengers: Age Of Ultron Cast On Jimmy Kimmel Live
By Nick Tylwalk
Before Avengers: Age of Ultron gets down to the serious business of entertaining millions of fans and (probably) smashing box office records, the cast members playing the six main super heroes got a chance to goof around together Monday on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

ABC’s late night show gathered Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner to talk just a bit about the movie and endure a lot of silliness before they hit the red carpet for the official world premiere. It began with a game of telephone, where Kimmel passed a phrase down through the entire group that sounded like it had something to do with a rash before exiting RDJ’s mouth as, “The diaphragm jelly is in my glove box.”
The actors clearly enjoy being in each other’s company, with Hemsworth noting that Age of Ultron felt like a high school reunion whereas The Avengers was more similar to the first day of school. Not surprisingly, they occupied most of the show, producing the following highlights:
- Asked who the group’s social director was, most fingers pointed at Evans – possibly because he’s the only one without any children. Downey claimed to be in charge of brunch, while Renner also got some support for organizing nightlife.
- A few cracks were made about Ruffalo’s “man-canceling suit” as the Hulk, with the actor explaining that it’s his motion capture leotard. It earned its name by making you “look small everywhere you wish you were big, and big everywhere you wish you were small.”
- Kimmel took great delight in sharing some fan art from Science Bros shippers. After a commercial break, Ruffalo and RDJ played along with the jokes by having the former sitting in the latter’s lap.
- Though the fans who got to participate by asking questions from Kimmel’s Wall of America didn’t exactly strike gold, things got better when a man named Clark from Los Angeles was picked — as in Clark Gregg, who plays Director of SHIELD Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gregg’s question was whether or not any of the Avengers might make some time to appear on the small screen, more than one of them responded that they’d love to appear on Agents of SHIELD. And did some eyes turn to Renner during that bit? It seemed like they might have.
A round of Avengers Family Feud finished off the appearance, and while the game quickly degenerated into chaos, it also featured a decisive victory for The Mans (Downey, Johansson and Hemsworth) over The Americas (Evans, Ruffalo and Renner). The final question was an embarrassing one for Ruffalo, as he failed to hit the board with his answer to, “What is the worst place to turn into the Hulk?” He said a phone booth, but RDJ’s side was quickly able to give the number one answer, which was “the bedroom/during sex.”
Kimmel presented the winners with a bicycle built for three, which Downey and Hemsworth proceeded to ride around the set. A few movie clips were interspersed with the segments, including one of Black Widow calming the Hulk and one of the initial encounters with a newly sentient Ultron.
All in all, a pretty fun if fluffy bit of publicity, one you’ll no doubt be able to see on the Jimmy Kimmel Live website soon. As for Avengers: Age of Ultron, you already know that’s headed our way on May 1.
