For those not familiar, Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight series revolves around an old retired Batman coming out of retirement (and features a rather iconic fight with Superman that the upcoming Batman v Superman movie is clearly drawing heavily from). The first in that series, The Dark Knight Returns, is considered a seminal piece of work. Frank Miller’s follow-up that came 15 years later, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, is largely considered laughably terrible.

Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment are very excited to have Frank Miller working on Batman again:

"We are thrilled to have Frank back home at DC writing Batman. The story he and Brian have crafted is an astounding and triumphant conclusion to this seminal body of work which influenced and shaped generations of readers and creators alike."

While I would never question Frank Miller’s early work as seminal and inspirational to comic books in general, it’s been years since he’s done anything noteworthy that wasn’t the subject of harsh criticism, be it from poor writing or outright racism & homophobia. I hope he can finally make something good again with a new Dark Knight story, but I’m not extremely optimistic at this point.
