Jared Leto’s Joker Revealed
By Steve Lam
Suicide Squad director David Ayer has released an official image of Jared Leto as the Clown Prince of Crime — The Joker.
As you can see, much of the Joker’s signature traits have been retained: green hair, chalky pale skin, and red lips. However, there are a few very notable additions to this incarnation of Batman’s most famous nemesis. Right off the bat, fans will notice that the Joker’s body is adorned with tattoos — a repeating motif being the toothy smile and “HAHAHA.” We also see that his front teeth have been crudely capped and crowned in metal. This is definitely a different Joker than the ones we’ve seen in the past — namely, Jack Nicholson’s and Heath Ledger’s in Batman (1989) and The Dark Knight (2008), respectively.

I’m not really sure about the “Damaged” tattoo on his forehead or the other facial markings. If they wanted tattoos, maybe they should’ve just kept them on his body. This way, he can still hide them and give a big reveal when it comes to it. Overall though, I like Leto’s effort in embodying the character and making it his own.
This official image comes after weeks of Leto teasing fans with images of him getting his hair cut and dyed, and paying an homage to Batman: The Killing Joke (March 1988). What do you think? What’s your reaction to Leto’s interpretation of The Joker?
Suicide Squad has a United States release date of August 5, 2016, and will be part of DC’s new shared universe of films which started with Man of Steel (2013) and will include the upcoming highly anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
