As we know, Asa Butterfield is currently one of two actors that rumours suggest Marvel want as their first (and Sony’s next) Spider-Man. But can the Ender’s Game star actually be Spider-Man, or is he too busy to film for the role?
Well, it all depends on how much Spider-Man will be in Marvel’s third Captain America film, Captain America: Civil War. Initial reports were that he would make a cameo and if that is indeed the case then pretty much anyone can do it regardless of prior commitments and schedule clashes.
But since the original announcement both Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans have hyped up Spider-Man (one will fund Spidey, the other will mentor him) leading me to believe Spidey might have a bigger part in the film than initial thought. This means that someone who is filming for another film apart from Civil War, which has started filming now, might not have time to be Spidey.
And Asa Butterfield is unfortunately one of those people. He’s currently filming in the UK for Tim Burton’s latest film ‘Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars’ which clashes quite badly with Civil War’s filming in Atlanta, Puerto Rico and Germany.
Of course this all depends on production lengths and schedules and whether or not Marvel’s production and Asa Butterfield can both find a gap in their schedules to film the required scenes should he be cast as Spider-Man but at the very least this is a stumbling block in the young actor’s path to the role.
Interestingly Nat Wolff, Timothee Chalamet and Dylan O’Brien all seem to be free from now on, which might tip the balance in their favour.
