Deadline had an exclusive scoop earlier this week that the search for a director had been narrowed down to six names. They represent only five choices, though, since two of them would come as a duo, a la the Russo brothers.

Let’s break them all down and find out what you would know them from in the past.

  • Jonathan Levine – This 38-year old filmmaker from New York City has a handful of screenwriting and directing credits under his belt. He did both duties for Warm Bodies, the zombie comedy/love story.
  • Ted Melfi -Also known as Theodore. His lone feature film directing gig was a successful one, as he won several critics awards for St. Vincent, a drama/comedy starring Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts that was released last year.
  • Jason Moore Two words: Pitch Perfect (though not its sequel, which will be out soon). He’s also got Sisters, formerly known as The Nest, a Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy coming this December.
  • John Francis Daley and Jonathan M/ Goldstein – These guys wrote Horrible Bosses together. You’ve also quite possibly seen Daley on TV, as he was in Freaks and Geeks and Bones.
  • Jared Hess – Alongside wife Jerusha, Hess co-wrote and directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, among others. Their latest film, Don Verdean, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival but hasn’t been released yet.

No prior super hero movie experience in the lot, but that approach hasn’t worked out to badly for Marvel so far. What all of these men have in common is comedy chops, something essential to a Spider-Man film done right. Deadline adds that the new Spidey flick will be set in high school, as will potential sequels, and that Sony and Marvel want the tone to be “John Hughes humor and emotion, plus all the superhero stuff.”

This sounds like a group that can give them that. Got a favorite from this list or someone else in mind who should be considered? Drop a comment below or hit us up on Twitter.
