First Supergirl Trailer Doesn’t Shy Away From Superman Legacy

The first trailer for CBS’ Supergirl series has been released online, and while Superman may never show up in it, there’s no doubt that it also won’t shy away from using the legacy of the Man of Steel to its full advantage.

Melissa Benoist begins the trailer with this voice-over:

"My name is Kara Zor-El. Twenty-four years ago, my planet was in peril. My cousin, Kal-El, was sent to a planet called Earth. You may know his story, but you don’t know mine."

There’s plenty more evidence of Superman as well. A blurry shot of him reaching his hand down to help, his face obscured. James Olsen (guess he’s outgrown Jimmy) showing Kara a picture of Superman in action while working for the Daily Planet. The gift she gets from her cousin that can be turned into a cape that won’t get damaged in combat. It’s pretty much everything possible short of mentioning him by name.

All told, it seems like a great way to connect Supergirl to the larger Superman mythos for the general public, even though it will doubtless cause comic book fans to ask nonstop questions about when/if the Man of Tomorrow will make an appearance. And if the rumored crossovers with The CW’s Arrow and The Flash would ever take place, it’ll be online chaos — in a good way.

Along with Benoist, other cast members who feature prominently in the trailer are Mehcad Brooks as Olsen, Calista Flockhart as media mogul Cat Grant (who appears to give Supergirl her name), Chyler Leigh as Kara’s foster sister, Alex Danvers, and David Harewood as DEO head Hank Henshaw — whose “I don’t trust aliens” bit will resonate with people who know his villainous path in the pages of DC Comics.

Supergirl will air Mondays at 8 pm on CBS, beginning in November.
