It just might be. And it could be Asa Butterfield, already rumored to be one of the front-runners for the role, who ends up starring in the upcoming Marvel/Sony co-production that will reboot Spidey (again) and make him part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — not to mention his expected appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
Umberto Gonzalez, formerly of Latino Review and currently breaking his scoops on social media while his own outlet is in the works, felt confident enough with his sources to take to Instagram to say that Butterfield as Spider-Man is almost a done deal, and that the two parties are talking details.
Here’s what “elmayimbe” had to say specifically:
"RT! BREAKING! THE NEWS YOU BEEN WAITING FOR! MARVEL HAS FOUND THEIR NEW SPIDER-MAN! IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE ASA BUTTERFIELD FOLKS AS MARVEL HAS OFFICIALLY ENTERED INTO NEGOTATIONS WITH BUTTERFIELD’S REPS! PAPERWORK HAS NOT BEEN FINALIZED YET! ONCE DEAL CLOSES EXPECT AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! BOOM!"
Yes, he does like caps a lot, but Gonzalez is often on the mark with his tidbits, and has one of the best networks of anonymous sources when it comes to the super hero movie game.
As for Butterfield, he’s an 18-year-old English actor whose highest profile Hollywood gig to date has been the lead role in the 2013 movie version of Ender’s Game. He certainly fits the bill as a younger Peter Parker, something long reported to be a goal this time around for both Marvel and Sony, and he’s got acting chops, garnering critical acclaim for his work in Hugo, among other films.
You know Marvel is going to make a big deal out of it when it’s time for an official announcement, so file this one away until then. In Gonzalez we trust, for now.
