There’s a lot we still have to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before we get to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in the summer of 2017. Three films, to be precise, including the heavily anticipated Captain America: Civil War, which has already started production.

Nevertheless, the wheels are already spinning for a Guardians sequel, according to director James Gunn. He answered fan questions just a few days ago on Periscope, revealing that the casting process was underway for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, for which Gunn is also busy writing the script.

That’s not the big news, though. Gunn confirmed that the cast will include at least one new team member. We’ve already speculated about the likes of Nova, Adam Warlock and even Iron Man, who joined the team briefly in the comics. But as Screen Rant reminds us, Gunn has also talked about adding more females to the mix for the sequel, which brings us back to the likes of Moondragon or Angela.

Still, if we’re going to assume the new Guardian is female, our money is on Mantis, simply because seeing her kick butt side by side with Gamora would be a treat. Her amusing speech patterns and unusual skin color would also help her fit right in with Star-Lord’s motley crew, and goodness knows the team could use someone with some healing aptitude.

It’s exciting to think that the creative process has already begun, even if it’s in the early stages. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (which probably won’t be its actual title, unless it is) is headed for the multiplex on your planet on May 5, 2017.
