Just in case you are a fan of Arrow and not the WWE, you might want to brush up on the latter just in case series star Stephen Amell really is going to step inside the squared circle later this summer.

Though Amell’s WWE participation has so far been limited to a brief appearance on Raw last Monday, rumors persist that he will be playing a more hands-on role in a few months. Multiple sites picked up a report yesterday that Amell would take on Stardust at SummerSlam, though others aren’t quite as sure. Stardust is the current in-ring name of wrestler Cody Rhodes, and he and Amell have been engaging in a bit of back and forth on Twitter that continued past Amell’s initial ringside bit.
The WWE has certainly gone the celebrity route in the past, with people from Mr. T to Floyd Mayweather who aren’t normally sports entertainers participating in matches. Those types of attractions generally take place at WrestleMania, the company’s biggest wrestling card of any calendar year, but SummerSlam is considered the second most prestigious show, and it wouldn’t shock me if the WWE felt like adding something to this one to spice things up — particularly since the event is moving from Los Angeles, where it’s been held the past few years, to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Vince McMahon and his inner circle have also long prided themselves on having their fingers on the pulse of pop culture, though not always with a 100 percent success rate (ahem, XFL). With super heroes in general so hot right now, and Arrow practically the godfather of current super hero TV, Amell would be a great ambassador to draw some additional eyeballs to SummerSlam. The actor is certainly used to at least a certain level of physicality playing Oliver Queen, and since the show isn’t until August 23, he’d have nearly three months to train to be at least passable in the ring.
For his part, Amell didn’t really do anything to quash the rumor Sunday on Twitter:
Now if we can just get a run-in by David Ramsey (a.k.a. Arrow‘s John Diggle), that would really put it over the top.
