Chiwetel Ejiofor Confirmed As Baron Mordo In Doctor Strange
By Nick Tylwalk
Those reports about Marvel talking to Chiwetel Ejiofor about a role in Doctor Strange turned out to be right on the money. Deadline found out today that not only is the actor going to be appearing in the upcoming film, he’ll be playing one of the titular hero’s oldest enemies.

Ejiofor will tackle the role of Baron Mordo, no doubt matching both wits and spells with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange. His archetype in the comics is that of the spurned pupil, as he was learning magic under Strange’s teacher, the Ancient One, before the mysterious figure determined Mordo had evil intentions.
Still, Ejiofor’s take might differ from what comics fans might expect, as this bit from the Deadline report illustrates:
"Although he’s an enemy in the comics, don’t look for him to be necessarily a completely villainous character. Rather, he’s an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange‘s mythology."
That’s certainly an interesting twist, and one that keeps the rumors of Dormammu as the main villain of the film very much alive and well. Might Mordo actually help Strange for the time being until he sees a way to seize power for himself, potentially setting up a showdown for a future sequel? It’s something to keep in mind.
Disney and Marvel definitely aren’t messing around when it comes to acting talent for Doctor Strange, with Cumberbatch and Ejiofor signed on and Tilda Swinton supposedly in talks as well. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the movie is scheduled for a November 4, 2016 release.
