Report: Asa Butterfield, Chandler Riggs Won’t Be Playing Spider-Man

And then there were three, or so it seems. Citing a media appearance by Jeff Sneider of The Wrap, Movie Pilot is reporting that Marvel and Sony are down to three candidates to play Spider-Man. The real surprise is the name missing from the shortlist: Asa Butterfield, who was rumored to be the front-runner not long ago.

Another young actor who won’t be doing any wall-crawling or web-slinging is Chandler Riggs. Known to many fans as Carl on The Walking Dead, Riggs announced that he was no longer under consideration on Twitter, though his message that “it would’ve been awesome for me” suggests he’s disappointed not to be landing the role.

So who does that leave? Sneider told Meet The Movie Press that the final three are Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz. There’s also the possibility that the big problem with two movie studios sharing the rights to a character — namely, that they might not agree on who to cast — is already rearing its ugly head, with Marvel liking Plummer and Sony preferring Holland.

Maybe they could compromise on Lintz? We might not ever know, but it would be interesting to find out if the studios really did have their minds set on Butterfield and just weren’t able to work anything out. In any event, the consensus is that the new Spidey, whoever he is, will have his presence requested on the Captain America: Civil War set in late July, so we should get an official announcement on the new Peter Parker sooner rather than later.
