Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice – Kryptonite Presence Confirmed

Along with the new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice images released by Entertainment Weekly earlier today, we have confirmation from director Zack Snyder that kryptonite will be making its debut in the film, and that Batman will be using it to battle Superman.

"If you’re going toe-to-toe with the son of Jor-El, you better come correct. For his climactic rooftop brawl with Superman, Batman outfits himself with a reinforced mech-suit equipped with strength-augmenting armor and, yes, kryptonite. The design resembles the one used for the confrontation between these two in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns."

A plot device introduced to weaken the powerful Man of Steel made its official debut in a story arc titled The Meteor from Krypton in June 1943 on The Adventures of Superman radio series.

What most people don’t know is that a proto-kryptonite concept was first established by Jerry Siegel in an unpublished 1940 story titled The K-Metal from Krypton.  The difference with this early version is that it didn’t just drain Superman of his powers, it also gave humans superpowers.

Throughout the years, kryptonite would become common in the Superman mythos and would eventually take on many forms — red kryptonite, blue kryptonite, etc. — with each one affecting Superman in a different way.  However, green kryptonite would remain the most famous and common form used in the stories.

It’ll be interesting to see how Batman will use kryptonite in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Rumors have suggested that the Dark Knight will be carrying a kryptonite spear when he battles the Man of Tomorrow.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has a United States release date of March 25, 2016.  It will be directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrio from a story by David Goyer and Zack Snyder, and will star Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves, Holly Hunter as a United States Senator, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg, and Callan Mulvey, Scoot McNairy, and Jena Malone in unspecified roles.
