Preview: Star Wars #7 Presents An Untold Tale Of Ben Kenobi
By Nick Tylwalk
Somewhere between the end of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi went from being a prominent Jedi leader to a hermit on Tatooine. Granted, it was out of necessity after the Emperor seized power and most of the Jedi were exterminated, but there’s never been a lot of exploration of how he became the “crazy old man” known as Ben Kenobi.

That changes in the pages of Star Wars #7, coming July 29 from the team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Simone Bianchi. Luke Skywalker has discovered the journals that Kenobi kept while living off the Empire’s radar in the desert, and what he finds in those pages promises to be a very interesting story indeed — and the first thing we’ve seen in the main Star Wars comic that isn’t something happening between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
Here’s the official tease from Marvel about what to expect:
"Now, experience Kenobi’s harrowing accounts of days long gone by! It is a time when injustice reigned on Tattooine. As villainous scum runs rampant over the blistering sands, only a Jedi Master stands any hope of liberating the planet from the grasp of gangs, thieves and thugs. But would Ben risk everything to do what was right? Even if it meant revealing himself to those searching for his whereabouts?"
Not only is this a cool way to change things up a bit before the book’s next big arc, it’s a fun way to work Kenobi into the series since he’s very much dead in the main title’s present. Something about a lightsaber battle with Darth Vader aboard the Death Star or something …
Scroll down for a preview of some of Bianchi’s pages, and look for Star Wars #7 on the final New Comic Book Day of July.
