Why Did Ben Affleck Want To Be Batman Anyways?
Ben Affleck is our new Batman, and will be our new Batman for quite a few years. Surely it’s cool to be able to say “I was Batman” (well except for George Clooney, but he’s been able to move past that). But with such an iconic role comes a lot of scrutiny and pressure, and Ben Affleck was making his mark as a highly acclaimed director with a string of critically lauded and award-winning films under his belt, plus you’d think he’d be a little old to be a new Batman. Turns out Ben Affleck had some of those concerns as well, as he told Entertainment Weekly in their latest issue.

"My first reaction was, ‘Are you sure?. At the time I was 40, 41, and had just finished Argo, and I felt like ‘This seems like a strange way to get to Batman.’ But Zack convinced me."
Ben Affleck also stressed that this is indeed an older Batman we are seeing in Batman v Superman, but one who is still playing up the billionaire playboy angle:
"He really keeps up the image of the playboy, actively. So you have more of a dichotomy which I thought was really fun, and a little sad, like the aging playboy."
But the deciding factor seemed to be that while Ben Affleck has plenty of experience directing, he thought Batman v Superman would give him hands on lessons in how to direct a big Hollywood blockbuster, should he ever want to do that:
"I thought if I was going to direct a movie like this, which I would like to do at some point, I need to have something of a refresher course of how these movies are done."
While Ben Affleck didn’t mention what film he would like to direct, that seems like a pretty big hint that Ben Affleck is going to be directing himself in the solo Batman film in development. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets any gigs for future DC movies as well.
