For Supergirl, Lucy Lane is described as being in her “mid-20s to early 30s” and “is as brash, funny, and beautiful as her sister Lois, yet strong, smart, and successful in her own right.”  The character will also be drawing from DC source material as she’ll be “an ex-girlfriend of Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) new CatCo media conglom colleague, Daily News transplant Jimmy Olsen (played by Mehcad Brooks).”

Created by Otto Binder and Curt Swan, Lucy Lane made her first appearance in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #36 (April 1959).  She first had an occupation as an airline stewardess and was Jimmy Olsen’s romantic interest.  In The Man of Steel #5 (December 1986), Lucy Lane was reintroduced into continuity as an air traffic controller.  Like most comic book characters, Lucy went through multiple changes throughout the years: encountering super-villains and even becoming a vampire bride.  One of her most significant changes was becoming Superwoman in Supergirl #35.  Her costume was an homage to the Bronze Age Superwoman Kristin Wells and also produced a containment field which gave her Kryptonian powers.  In the New 52 continuity, Lucy Lane’s Superwoman history was removed.

This will not be the first live-incarnation of Lucy Lane.  In Superman: The Movie (1978), she was mentioned by name by Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane.  In Supergirl (1984), Maureen Teefy portrayed her.

For her television appearances, the character appeared in three episodes of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and was portrayed by Elizabeth Barondes.  In Smallville, the character was introduced in a Season 4 episode titled Lucy.  Here, she was portrayed by Peyton List who now has the role of Lisa Snart / Golden Glider on The CW’s Arrow.

CBS’s Supergirl is set to premiere on October 26, 2015.  The series was developed by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler, and Andrew Kreisberg, and will star Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El / Kara Danvers / Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.  Laura Benanti will having a recurring role as Alural Zore-El.  Guest stars will include Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, Helen Slater as Eliza Danvers, Dean Cain as Jeremiah Danvers, Faran Tahir as The Commander, and Owan Yeoman as Vartox.
