Jurassic World Passes Avengers For #3 Spot In All-Time Box Office Revenue

As it turns out, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes weren’t able to hold off the inexorable march of the dinosaurs. That’s right, even The Avengers have fallen to the awesome might of Jurassic World.

It’s been trending that way all along, but it became official once the Tuesday box office numbers were in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jurassic World is now the No. 3 movie all-time in terms of worldwide box office revenue, currently sitting at a cool $1.522 billion. Not bad for a franchise that had been dormant for more than a decade and whose forgettable previous entry managed just $368 million around the globe.
Domestically, The Avengers is still holding on to third place, but its lead has been cut to $9.1 million. That gap is likely to evaporate by the end of July considering the trajectory of Jurassic World to date.
And since The Avengers was the top-grossing super hero movie of all time both in the U.S. and worldwide, it’s hard to imagine any other contender from that genre rising up to reclaim the throne. Certainly, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the subsequent Justice League movies might have a chance if they’re well-received, and the Avengers: Infinity War movies could get up in that range as well — though most of the evidence out there on movies split into multiple parts suggests doing so damages the earning potential of the installments just a bit in service to the greater whole.
For now, we’ll just have to content ourselves with the idea that dinos trump capes. Watch out for those lightsabers coming at the end of the year, though …
