Agents Of SHIELD: Who Is Constance Zimmer Playing?

My wife and sister-in-law have both been abuzz with the news that someone from UnREAL is joining the cast of Agents of SHIELD. That someone is Constance Zimmer, who my better half assures me is a fantastic villain on UnREAL and an actress that can definitely play someone who can “go toe-to-toe with Coulson,” as Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb put it in Marvel’s official announcement of her casting.

Here’s the thing, though: no one is saying exactly who she’ll be playing. Marvel is calling her role, “the head of a mysterious new group” that is looking for awakened Inhumans just like SHIELD. Other reports have been more specific and said she’ll be working for the government.

So who might she be? The most logical character in my mind is unfortunately someone we’ve already seen — and is now dead. I’m talking about Victoria Hand, who was played by Saffron Burrows on the show and was killed off by Grant Ward.

Let’s dig a little deeper and see who might fit. A lot depends on who this new government organization is. If it’s H.A.M.M.E.R., maybe Zimmer will be Deidre Wentworth, also known as the villain Superia. Prior to the latter half of Season 2, it would have been unusual for a super-powered character to be one of the top choices, but all bets are pretty much off on that score at this point.

Or perhaps the organization is SWORD, the government agency in charge of protecting Earth from extraterrestrial threats. It’s not hard to imagine the need for that group in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the Battle of New York, which means Zimmer could be Abigail Brand. Wonder how she looks with green hair …

We’re just spitballing here, obviously, but the point is that there are existing Marvel characters who fit the vague tease we’ve been given for Zimmer, and the writers can obviously create one from whole cloth as well. All I know is that she’s accumulated a lot of fans, my loved ones among them, so here’s hoping she sticks around a little longer than Lucy Lawless did in Season 2.
